A class made by looking

The Rabbits are not simply frightened citizens. They are subjects whose uncertainty has become durable enough to govern. The network exposes them to competing memories, then offers repetition as relief. Each return feels like orientation even when it is the mechanism of capture.

This makes them the ideal electorate for a state promising the stable remembered narrative of Club Silencio. They know the performance is recorded; they still need the feeling to arrive on cue.

02

Club Silencio and the usher

At the phantom cinema in the Toronto Eaton Centre, Barb lifts the rope like a curtain. The gesture is regulatory, almost courteous. The audience learns where the threshold is by watching the one body permitted to move across it.

Spatial inconsistencies accumulate. People leave on the wrong mall level. Roots becomes Rhizomes. Lightning machines occupy cup holders and warm seats. The nickname Silencione binds the theatre’s revelation—there is no band—to the wrestler who makes the revelation enforceable.

03

Stasis as temporal injury

The Rabbit does not freeze at one moment. Stasis is a loop of failed anticipation: the action is forever about to begin, the danger forever newly recognized. Barb’s metronomic presence tightens time around the chest until waiting becomes a bodily posture.

The Mothman’s gaze intensifies the condition. Heavy cloth seems to fold in the dark; red eyes operate as focus rather than illumination. The witness recalls paralysis, nausea, respiratory arrest and time tightening around the chest. Fearclosure arrives as self-regulation.

04

The harbinger soundtrack

All Along the Watchtower is not accompaniment but announcement. Its Dylan plain-spokenness signals approach before arrival, teaching anticipation until power becomes ambient and Barb’s legibility is sufficient. The song is part of the hold even while no wrestler is touching the subject.

Sensitive Barb’s second alarm is Vincent Gallo singing “When.” Where Watchtower warns, “When” stretches longing into dread. The Rabbits hear the whingeing falsetto at night and cannot decide whether the song precedes the trespass, remembers it or keeps it from ending.

05

Recently remembered

The adjective protects the Rabbits from false antiquity. They may appear to belong to the deep canon, yet the memories themselves arrive late. Proleptic contamination sends the future trauma backwards and manufactures the feeling that everyone had always known them.

To remember a Rabbit is therefore to witness the memory being installed.
