Around the time of The Index Crisis, when memories of Club Silencio were re-emerging, along with them came recollections of an usher there, a hulking beast of a man, who a minority of rememberers also remembered as the Club Silencio Bantam Women’s Wrestling Coach. With memories of Barb’s presence there, somebody started changing things relative to the history of The World Wrestling Federation. We knew who Barb was. We just couldn’t remember this movie, though, or what role Barb had in it, and who he was supposed to play in this collative Deleuzion we all bought into.

In what came to be called Kayfabe Realité—reality as it was known and recorded until Being and Time were DoTarKianly ravelled out of reach—Barb debuts in WCW in 1989 as Tonga John, against a man named Randy Stallings. He joins the golden-age WWF as one half of The Powers of Pain alongside The Warlord. His presence was authentically imposing in matches against Demolition. His defining moment came at Survivor Series 1990, where The Barbarian stood as the last man standing on The Million Dollar Team against Hogan in the main event.

His presence was authentically imposing, to the point that the cartoonish WWF system could not risk letting him become its champion. Instead, The Barbarian was repeatedly sacrificed, built up only to be brought down: an authentic tough man whose defeats were legitimized by the narrative machine’s need for Little Hulkamaniacs buying bedsheets. The Barbarian’s role: he was credible enough to terrify heroes, yet never allowed to triumph. Backstage lore frames him as “too real to win.” The Old Man drew on The Barbarian’s genuine aura of danger while carefully containing it, reinforcing the illusion of its larger-than-life heroes.

The transition from the once consensual, historical record known as “kayfabe reality” to the radicalized “Real” of the DoTarK reality represents a profound semioclasm, a systematic dismantling of the myths that once anchored the human experience in the late twentieth century. In the narrative of the Shared Experiential Space, our actual history—characterized by the heroic triumphs of figures like Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior—is no longer regarded as an objective past but as a “fake” or “staged” construct. It comes on you like a software upgrade that installed itself in the night, and now your whole user interface is different.

The Barbarian’s lot in the golden era was a loop of legitimized defeat: each time he neared the top, his very authenticity mandated that he be kept in check, never permitted to break the narrative’s predetermined order. On the wrong end of the ultimate revenge quests that characterize WWE storylines—and, many believe, The SES itself—he is an ideal content candidate for DoTarKian enforcer because he was an underutilized, hence unappreciated commodity, and so the DoTarKian WWF gives Barb ample opportunity to “be real.”

Barthes notes in The World of Wrestling that the wrestler is not a person but a “character in a passion play.” Barb, as the “Absolute Monster Heel,” is the physical manifestation of the Apeiron’s hunger. The emergence, and then the all-pervasive presence, of Barb is the first indication that Deception Cruiselines has sold our liability to a collection agency, and souled our lability with The Collector’s urgency. We are being told, in terms not entirely uncertain, that it’s time to pay—and pay—and pay.

For all DoTarK Barb’s castrations, decapitations, dream-Kruegering and Mothmaniacal hellraising, Barb as the “memory-fracture artifact” supplies an Authentic Temporality: the reality of pain, the potential for real consequences, which the dominant narrative of Kayfabe reality never allowed to step up to the main event of narrative protagonism. Were Barb simply a memory, false or otherwise, he would not have had the perceived agency required to fulfill his unacknowledged MTA-generated mandate: to get something back of The Real. Revealing, as Heidegger writes, always arrives as a type of robbery.

Recruited by Ron to be his SES enforcer, Barb takes one last otoscopic glance at what had seemed the real. “Time has stopped” can also be taken, in more spatial terms, to mean that time is gone. Time has left the territory. Time could see where it was being booked on the progressive card and went off to learn a new hold. In the Shared Referential Space of what we then remembered and what we now remember, The Barbarian is both ancient and new, champion and jobber, myth and reality, dream and memory.

The Barbarian’s temporal position in wrestling history—straddling the end of Hulkamania and the dawn of a grittier ’90s realism—makes him an ideal avatar for the collapse of temporal coherence. He is a man out of time, simultaneously a relic of The Golden Era and a harbinger of the darkening, DoTarKening Attitude to come. Within this virtual theatre of cruelty, The Barbarian becomes the dark apotheosis of his kayfabe persona: an unstoppable champion, a “Real American Nightmare” who takes far more from Hogan than his privileged position atop the card.
